Meet at the Barre

Looking for a new workout that’s easy on your joints and doesn’t require much equipment?

Barre method might be for you! When I first heard of barre method, I started having flashbacks of ballet class growing up. I thought about my ballet teacher poking at my body to get that perfect ballet posture and the constant struggle to become more flexible. I honestly didn’t think I would like barre exercise and was unmotivated to put myself in a position that would make me feel clumsy or incompetent.

Now that I’ve experienced it, I understand some of the common misconceptions people have about barre class. First, you do not need to worry about being flexible and you don’t need to have a background in ballet or dance for that matter. It’s a great way to challenge your core and strengthen your postural muscles. Barre is a full body exercise that incorporates traditional ballet techniques with modern exercises. You’ll see exercises that are commonly used in Pilates and yoga as well. There are several types of barre classes and different levels, so you can find something that interests you and supports your current exercise level.

As a physical therapist, I’ve been able to incorporate some of these techniques to help some of my senior patients with standing balance and coordination. It can easily be adjusted for all levels. At the other end of the spectrum, if you’ve dreamed about having long and lean muscles, it’s your chance to unleash your inner ballerina and work towards your fitness goals.

What is barre exercise?

Barre exercise combines methods of traditional ballet with Pilates with other forms of exercise. It utilizes small movements such as pulses for increased isometric contraction of muscles. While holding various positions and activating your core musculature, you get a great muscle burn that feels more internal versus external from lifting weights. Some instructors will use some equipment for added resistance. Small hand weights, exercise bands, and mini exercise balls are some common additions.

What are the benefits of Barre?

Barre exercises help improve posture and strengthen muscles while toning the whole body. It increases cardiovascular endurance and increases flexibility. While focusing on isolated movements, you strengthen the connection between your mind and body (proprioception), as well as improve your coordination. It helps prevent osteoporosis by using standing body weight exercises.

It’s great for all ages! It’s low impact on your joints and can be done mostly in a standing position. There are many ways to modify movements to make it work within your capabilities. There are also classes that use movements that require high level balance and coordination, as well as flexibility at the barre.

exercise Considerations

If your main goal is to lose weight, this type of exercise is better used as an adjunct to diet and cardiovascular exercise. You’re not burning calories at the same level as jogging or running for example. It’s more effective for whole body strengthening.

If you have suffered a knee injury or have knee pain, repetitive bending of the knees or holding a squat position can be irritating. Maintaining good alignment is important with these workouts.
